Housing crisis and dilapidated buildings in the Gaza Strip

Some buildings from the May 2021 aggression on the Gaza Strip are still without any progress in their reconstruction, which required the protest of some national forces to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Refugees to demand the speedy construction of about 700 homes that UNRWA has received since then.

This comes in light of the continued need of the Gaza Strip for about 300 million dollars to complete the restoration and rebuilding of dilapidated houses, according to the statements of the Ministry of Works and Housing in Gaza.

In the same context, the ministry confirmed that there is a deficit of up to 120,000 housing units and that the Gaza Strip needs 14,000 housing units annually to fill the deficit, and there are 60,000 housing units that need restoration and rehabilitation to meet the standards of the minimum appropriate housing requirement.

In 2019, a survey was conducted of 45,000 cases of poor families in coordination between the Ministries of Works and Social Development, and it was found that 17,000 cases need building a new housing unit, and there are 7,000 cases living in dilapidated housing units, and 60 thousand cases need repair and rehabilitation from New, and statistics appeared with the research related to the difficult social conditions of families, and were classified according to the mechanism used.

It is worth noting that the last aggression in 2021 caused the damage of 1,439 economic facilities in whole and in part, as well as the damage of about 7,700 housing units, including 1,314 in total, and 6,386 in part, while the number of suspended factories increased during 2021 to 569 factory.
